BMW Valve Cover Gasket Leak (N20, N54, N55, N63)

Burning oil smell but no drip usually means a BMW valve cover gasket leak. Symptoms, gasket vs cover, when to stop driving, and $650-$4,000 costs by engine.

Short Answer

A BMW valve cover gasket leak (BMW calls it the cylinder head cover) usually shows up as a burning oil smell after driving, not a puddle, because the oil cooks off on hot exhaust. Estimates run $650-$1,700 on an N20, N26, N54 or N55 and $1,700-$4,000 on an N63 V8. Fix it before oil reaches the spark plug tubes.

Estimated Cost$650–$4,000
Labor2.5-10 hrs
Diagnosis1.0-2.0 hrs
Affected2007-2019

The low end is a gasket-only repair on an N20 or N26 where the cover checks out flat and uncracked. The high end is both banks on an N63 V8 with new covers. The biggest variable is whether the old cover is reusable, and nobody can tell you that reliably until it is off the engine. These are planning estimates, not quotes.

What You’ll Notice

  • A hot burning-oil smell through the vents after you park, with nothing on the driveway yet
  • Thin wisps of smoke drifting up from the top of the engine after a drive, not at cold start
  • A dark, wet film running down one side of the engine toward the block
  • Oil sitting in the spark plug holes, found when somebody pulls the coils
  • A misfire on the same cylinder that a new coil fixes temporarily, then comes back
  • A whistle, hiss or howl at idle that goes away the second you lift the oil filler cap
  • Needing a quart of oil between services on a car that never used any before
  • Reduced-power or boost faults alongside the oil smell on an N54 or an early N55

If you ignore it: Oil running onto a turbo housing is a fire risk and oil in the spark plug tubes ruins coils over time, so stop driving and have it towed if you see smoke from the engine bay or oil running onto the exhaust.

#The short answer on a burning oil smell after driving

The valve cover sits at the very top of the engine. Oil that escapes its gasket runs down onto the exhaust manifold or a turbine housing and cooks off, so most owners notice a hot oil smell after parking long before a puddle shows up. What makes the job expensive is everything stacked on top of it: fuel system, ignition and wiring.

Not every oil smell is the valve cover. The oil filter housing gasket and the vacuum pump seal leak on the same engines. A price quoted off a phone description is a range, not a diagnosis. We will give you one, and tell you it can move once the cover is off.

What you noticeWhat it usually points to
Burning smell after parking, no dripThe gasket weeping onto the exhaust side
Oil in a plug tube, repeat misfire on that cylinderA failed plug tube seal. Oil in the boot tracks the spark to ground, so a new coil soaks through too.
Idle whistle that stops when you lift the oil capExcess crankcase vacuum from a failed ventilation valve inside the cover
Rising oil use, oily charge pipesA ventilation fault pulling oil mist into the intake
Underboost plus an oil leakOn an N54 or pneumatic-wastegate N55, possibly the cover's vacuum reservoir. On an N20, N26 or electric-wastegate N55, a separate fault.

#Why BMW valve cover gaskets leak

"Valve cover leak" is really four failures, and they do not all get fixed the same way.

The gasket takes a set

The molded gasket also seals each spark plug tube. It is an elastomer on the most heat-cycled surface on the engine. Heat cycling takes the spring out of it, and once it stops pushing back, the low clamp load these joints run on is no longer enough.

The cover bolts lose clamp load

BMW names this first on the N20 and N26, in SI B11 03 15 (March 2015): loose retaining bolts. The bolts pass through the plastic cover and thread into the aluminum cylinder head. The plastic clamped between them creeps under heat, so the joint relaxes even though no bolt backed out. That is why a re-torque alone tends to leak again.

The cover distorts or cracks

On the N20, N26, N54 and N55 the cover is glass-filled plastic. The usual failure is the sealing flange creeping out of flat, plus hairline cracks at bolt bosses, vacuum chamber corners and ventilation drains.

On the vacuum-wastegate engines, the N54 and pneumatic-wastegate N55s, the cover also stores wastegate vacuum. SI B11 03 08 names leakage from that reservoir as a crankcase pressure fault and notes it can fill with oil, so a cracked cover can cause underboost. The N20, N26 and later N55s use an electric wastegate actuator, so there it cannot.

The crankcase ventilation inside the cover fails

On these four- and six-cylinders the ventilation valve is built into the cover: a spring-and-diaphragm assembly holding a slight crankcase vacuum. A torn diaphragm or stuck valve gives too much vacuum or too much pressure. BMW lists both as damaging oil seals and raising oil consumption; under-pressure adds a whistle that "can be misdiagnosed as a defective turbocharger." Over-pressure pushes oil past the gasket directly.

#How a BMW valve cover leak gets diagnosed

This is the job on our side. It is here so you can tell whether a shop is doing it, not as a driveway procedure.

  1. 01
Degrease and heat cycleOld residue gets mistaken for a cover leak. Clean the top end and exhaust side, run to full temperature, re-inspect with UV dye, and rule out the filter housing gasket, vacuum pump seal and turbo oil lines.
  2. 02
N20 and N26: check the boltsSI B11 03 15 has each bolt checked in the factory sequence and loose ones recorded. None loose means the leak is elsewhere. Any loose, and BMW still directs a gasket set, not a cover.
  3. 03
Pull the coilsEngine cold, battery disconnected. Oil in a tube confirms the plug tube seal has failed and the misfire is mechanical. Check the boots for swelling and read misfire counters rather than a stored code.
  4. 04
Measure crankcase pressureBMW uses its IMIB tester at the filler cap; a manometer and cap adapter does the equivalent. Clearly out of spec means the valve inside the cover has failed, and no gasket fixes that.
  5. 05
Smoke testOn an N54 or pneumatic-wastegate N55, a cracked cover can explain an oil leak and underboost together. On an N20, N26 or electric-wastegate N55 it cannot.
  6. 06
Straightedge the coverOff the car, check the flange for daylight both ways, the bosses and drains for cracks, and the vacuum reservoir for oil on cars that have one. This decides gasket versus cover.

Gasket only, or the whole cover?

On the N20 and N26, SI B11 03 15 directs replacing the gasket set, not the cover. We decide it off the part, not a forum.

The cover gets replaced if the flange is not flat, the plastic is cracked, the vacuum reservoir has oil in it on cars that have one, or crankcase pressure was out of spec, because BMW does not sell the ventilation valve separately. Aftermarket membrane kits exist; we don't use them on a customer car because the failure point is the cover's integrated assembly, not just the diaphragm.

We quote the gasket and we quote the cover as a contingency, and we get authorization for both before the wrench comes out. Then you see the straightedge across the flange, and you decide with the same information I have.

#How much BMW valve cover gasket replacement costs

Coils, plugs, high-pressure fuel lines and the wiring channel come off first, plus the fuel rail on the V8. Figures are estimates for an independent specialist; the last column is roughly what members save. Only a written estimate is binding, under the service terms posted on our site.

N553.5-5.0$840-$1,225$1,100-$1,700$265-$375
N63 / S63, both banks7-10$1,700-$2,600$2,600-$4,000$525-$750

What moves it: whether the cover is reusable and which brand goes on. At the time of writing, an OE-supplier N54 cover runs roughly $250-$350 against about $586 genuine; we quote parts live. Add $150-$500 for plugs and any coil that sat in oil. Doing both V8 banks together, or an N54, N55 or N63 filter housing gasket on the same visit, saves overlapping labor.

Is a BMW valve cover leak covered by a recall or warranty?

As of September 2026 we are not aware of a recall or warranty extension for valve cover leaks on these engines, and a service bulletin is repair guidance, not a campaign. Coverage is applied by VIN and changes, so call a BMW dealer with yours before authorizing anything here.

#Part numbers, torque specs and DIY notes

An N20 or N26 is within reach of an experienced DIYer with the factory repair instruction. The N54 and N55 add high-pressure fuel lines. The N63 is not a driveway job.

  1. Battery disconnected, engine fully cold.
  2. Coils, wiring channel and harness moved clear.
  3. Fuel system depressurized, high-pressure line and pump hardware removed per the factory procedure.
  4. Cover lifted straight off, head surface cleaned, flange straightedged.
  5. New gasket and plug tube seals, cover lowered without forcing, bolts torqued in the factory sequence, criss-cross from the interior outward in at least two passes.

Use a 1/4-inch torque wrench accurate in single-digit Nm. A 3/8-inch wrench starting at 20 Nm cannot control this joint, and over-tightening cracks covers. Without the factory torque figure and a wrench calibrated for it, this is not a driveway job. We fit genuine or OE-supplier covers; we have seen no controlled evidence that aluminum aftermarket covers outlast plastic.

#Is it safe to drive with a valve cover gasket leak?

A light weep, for short trips to get it repaired, usually. A leak heavy enough to smoke is not: that oil lands on exhaust parts well above its ignition temperature. We are not aware of an official finding tying engine fires to this failure, and we are not going to pretend there is one. But the mechanism is real.

What happens if you don't fix it

Coils and catalytic converters. Oil in the plug tubes ruins coils over time, and sustained misfire can cook a catalytic converter, a four-figure part on these cars.

Crankshaft seals. BMW lists oil seal damage from both excess crankcase pressure and excess vacuum. Replacing a rear main seal means pulling the transmission, a far bigger bill than this job.

Intake carbon. Oil mist from a failed ventilation valve feeds the buildup covered in BMW Carbon Buildup (N54, N55, N20): Walnut Blasting Cost.

The wrong part. BMW warns the ventilation whistle can be misdiagnosed as a failed turbo, and a turbo that was never needed costs thousands.

#Keeping it from coming back

  • Shorten the oil interval; we recommend 5,000-7,500 miles on these engines. Degraded oil sludges the ventilation passages, and BMW lists that obstruction as a cause of over-pressure.
  • Fix an idle whistle that stops when you lift the oil cap. Excess vacuum works on the crank seals for as long as it runs.
  • Do not wait for the drip. A weep on a flat cover is a gasket job; oil down the block often means a cover, plugs and coils.
  • Have the flange straightedged whenever the cover is off for other work.
  • On an N20 or N26 with no leak yet, a bolt check in the factory sequence at service is reasonable preventive work, at a shop with a wrench calibrated for single-digit Nm. Over-tightening cracks the cover.

Common Questions

Is it safe to drive with a BMW valve cover gasket leak?

A light weep, short trips to get it repaired, usually. A leak heavy enough to smoke is a different answer. Stop driving and have it towed if you see smoke from the engine bay, the burning smell gets stronger over a single drive, oil is running onto the exhaust or turbo, or the oil level drops between fill-ups. Check your oil level before every drive until it is fixed, and do not open the hood until the engine has cooled.

How much does a BMW valve cover gasket replacement cost?

At an independent European specialist, roughly $650-$1,050 for a gasket-only repair on an N20 or N26 (F30 328i, F25 X3 28i), $720-$1,225 on an N54 or N55 (E90 335i, F30 335i), and $1,700-$2,600 for both banks on an N63 V8. A new cover takes the four- and six-cylinders up to about $1,700 and the V8 up to $4,000. These are estimates, not quotes.

How long does it take to replace a BMW valve cover gasket?

Labor runs about 2.5-4 hours on an N20 or N26, 3-5 hours on an N54 or N55, and 7-10 hours for both banks on an N63 V8, plus 1-2 hours of diagnosis beforehand. A four- or six-cylinder is normally a one-day job once parts are in hand. An N63, or a car waiting on a cover that is not in stock, can run into a second day.

Do I need a whole new valve cover or just the gasket?

It depends on what the cover looks like off the engine, and nobody can decide it reliably before then. On the N20 and N26, BMW's SI B11 03 15 directs replacing the gasket set. The cover gets replaced if the flange is not flat, the plastic is cracked, the wastegate vacuum reservoir has oil in it on cars that have one, or crankcase pressure was out of spec, because the ventilation valve is built into the cover.

Why does my BMW whistle at idle and go quiet when I take the oil cap off?

On an N20, N26, N54 or N55, that is excessive crankcase vacuum. The ventilation valve inside the valve cover is supposed to hold only a slight vacuum. When it sticks or its diaphragm tears, it pulls the crankcase down hard enough that air is drawn past the crankshaft seal lips, and the fluttering lips make the whistle. BMW notes this noise can be misdiagnosed as a bad turbocharger. It should be measured, not guessed at.

Why do my ignition coils keep failing on the same cylinder?

Because the coil is not the problem. When the valve cover gasket's spark plug tube seal fails, oil pools around the coil boot and the spark tracks to ground down the outside of the insulator instead of jumping the gap. Fix the leak, replace the plug, and replace any coil that sat in oil. A new coil on its own just soaks through too.

Is this the same as an oil filter housing gasket leak?

No, and they get confused constantly on the N54, N55 and N63. A valve cover leak starts at the top of the head and runs down the side, and you smell it cooking on the exhaust. A filter housing leak soaks the belt and the front of the block lower down. Both can leak at once. A degrease and a heat cycle usually separates them.

Is a valve cover leak covered by a BMW recall or warranty extension?

Not that we are aware of, as of September 2026. A technical service bulletin like SI B11 03 15 is repair guidance, not a recall or a warranty extension. Coverage programs change and are applied by VIN, so call a BMW dealer with your VIN and ask about open campaigns, extensions or goodwill before you pay anyone, including us.
